A Little Treasure Named Debao
When Debao first came home in Guizhou, China, his pawrents wanted to give him a name that reflected how special he was.
Since he was a little tabby cat and his coat was not easy to describe with a simple colour-based name, she thought of him as a “treasure” that had come into the family. That is how he got the name Debao, meaning “a precious treasure.”
The Most Sociable Cat in the Room
She first met Debao at a cat shop. While many of the other cats were sleeping or grooming themselves, Debao immediately stood out.
He was energetic and curious, and he actively approached her and rubbed against her hand. As soon as she petted him, he began purring contentedly. She was also told that his breed was relatively easy to care for, with less shedding, few dietary preferences and a generally gentle temperament.
But what really convinced her was his personality.
At one point, Debao even jumped down from a tall cat tree just to greet her. He seemed confident, friendly and completely unafraid of strangers.
A Friendly, Easygoing Foodie
Debao is gentle, energetic and surprisingly good at understanding people. He is not afraid of strangers and tends to be very sociable. At the same time, he can be quite laid-back and carefree.
And, of course, he loves food. His parents describe him as a little foodie who is always ready for something delicious.
A Companion During Difficult Times
One of her favourite memories with Debao comes from the pandemic.
Being stuck at home was sometimes boring and lonely. She spent much of her time writing fan fiction on her computer, while Debao would quietly stay beside her.
Every now and then, she would hear his soft purring while he sat nearby.
His presence made those days feel warmer, calmer and less lonely. He wasn’t doing anything particularly dramatic—he was simply there, keeping her company.
Sometimes, that is exactly what we need from a cat.
The Great Snack War
But Debao isn’t always peaceful.
After his parents went away to university, her parents were sometimes busy with work and travel. Worried that Debao might feel lonely, her mother brought home another little white cat to keep him company.
Unfortunately, their friendship did not always go smoothly.
One day, the white cat secretly ate some of Debao’s snacks. Debao was not impressed. The two cats ended up fighting over the stolen food. The funniest part? Debao actually lost.
Because he had gained a little too much weight from all those snacks, he was apparently not agile enough to win the fight. Watching him sulk after losing the battle was hilarious.
Perhaps being a foodie comes with a price.
More Than Just a Pet
For his parents, Debao has also brought an unexpected change: a stronger sense of responsibility.
Before having a cat, she didn’t think much about managing daily responsibilities. But once Debao became part of her life, she had to remember to clean his litter box, feed him and occasionally give him a bath.
Taking care of him gradually taught her to become more responsible.
Looking back, she feels that this is one of the most meaningful things Debao has given her—not just companionship, but also a sense of responsibility that has stayed with her.
Three Words to Describe Debao
If she had to describe Debao in just three words: Lively. Athletic. Friendly.
And perhaps there is one more word we could add: Treasure. 🐱💛
