Across the world, countless cats survive on the streets thanks to the kindness of ordinary people who choose to care. In our Guardians of the Whiskers series, we shine a spotlight on these everyday heroes—people whose compassion and commitment are changing feline lives, one whisker at a time.
Today, we travel to Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia, to meet Adeq Limeh, a dedicated cat rescuer whose journey began with a single kitten and grew into a lifelong mission.

One Kitten Changed Everything
Adeq's love for cats started about 15 years ago when she came across a tiny kitten alone on the street.
"I didn't really understand cats at that time," she recalls. "But I wanted to help, so I took the kitten home."
What began as a simple act of kindness soon became something much bigger. After rescuing that first kitten, Adeq found it impossible to ignore the suffering of abandoned cats she encountered. Every stray cat she saw reminded her that there was a life in need of help.
"From then on, every time I saw an abandoned cat, I felt sad and wanted to take it home."
Over the years, that instinct to help has transformed into a tireless rescue effort, providing shelter, care, and second chances to cats that otherwise might have been left behind.
The Challenges Behind Rescue Work
While rescue stories often focus on happy endings, the reality of animal rescue is far more complex. For Adeq, one of the greatest challenges is financial.
"The hardest and most exhausting part is when there are no donations for food or to pay veterinary debts."
Like many independent rescuers around the world, she shoulders enormous responsibilities. Food, medical treatments, emergency care, vaccinations, and shelter expenses quickly add up. Yet the needs of the cats never stop.
Adeq currently cares for rescued cats across multiple locations, including a second cat house. One of her biggest concerns is the uncertainty of rented spaces and what could happen if she were forced to move.
"I still rent one of the places, and I worry about what will happen to the street cats we've saved if we get evicted."
It's a reminder that rescue work doesn't end when a cat is taken off the street. The long-term challenge is providing safety, stability, and ongoing care.
Never Giving Up
Despite the emotional and financial strain, giving up has never been an option.
"I've been tired. Sometimes I've wanted to scream," Adeq admits. "But I've never thought about stopping."
That determination is what makes rescuers like Adeq so extraordinary. They continue even when resources are scarce, when the workload feels overwhelming, and when there are more cats in need than they can realistically help.
For Adeq, every rescued cat is worth the effort.
A Message to the Community
Beyond rescue work itself, Adeq is passionate about educating people about responsible pet ownership.
"I always tell people: don't throw away cats. Believe me, karma exists."
Abandonment remains one of the biggest causes of suffering for cats everywhere. Through her work and advocacy, Adeq hopes more people will choose compassion, responsibility, and kindness.
How You Can Help
Independent rescuers often rely entirely on public support. Adeq says that donations are one of the most important ways people can help her continue caring for rescued cats and covering veterinary expenses.
Every contribution—no matter how small—can make a meaningful difference in the lives of cats waiting for food, treatment, and a safe place to call home.
