Guardians of the Whiskers: Save A Gato — Giving Puerto Rico's Community Cats a Second Chance✨✨

Some heroes don't wear capes—they carry cat traps, transport carriers, and endless compassion.

For this edition of Guardians of the Whiskers, we're proud to introduce Save A Gato, a volunteer-run nonprofit organization based in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. For more than two decades, their team has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of community cats through rescue, medical care, adoption, education, and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).

More Than Rescue

Save A Gato believes that every cat deserves compassion, whether they continue living safely in an outdoor colony or find a forever home indoors.

Their mission goes beyond rescuing individual cats. By promoting TNR, they help humanely reduce the homeless cat population while improving the health and wellbeing of entire cat colonies.

A Mission That Started with Learning

One member of the team shared that they never imagined becoming a cat rescuer.

Seventeen years ago, they joined Save A Gato as a volunteer with no previous experience. As they learned more about the daily struggles of community cats, they realized that much of the suffering they witnessed could be prevented.

Watching TNR transform the lives of both cats and local communities inspired them to dedicate themselves to this mission.

A Story They Will Never Forget

Among the many cats Save A Gato has rescued, one story continues to stand out.

Winky was born without eyelids and spent years surviving on the streets while living with constant pain.

After finally being rescued, Save A Gato found a family in Virginia willing to provide the specialized veterinary care he needed. For the team, seeing Winky finally experience safety, comfort, and love was a reminder that even the most difficult rescues can have happy endings.

The Biggest Challenge Isn't Rescue

While rescuing cats is never easy, Save A Gato says their greatest challenge is education.

Too many pets are left unsterilized, leading to countless unwanted litters. Rescue organizations often receive more requests for help than they have the resources to manage.

This is why Save A Gato continues to promote Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), which helps prevent future litters, improves cats' health, reduces nuisance behaviours, and creates healthier, more stable communities for both cats and people.

As the team explains:

"Community cats are not the problem—they are the result of people failing to spay and neuter their pets."
