LUNI Singapore: Continuing the Mission

Since we last spoke with LUNI in 2023, the organization has continued its mission of helping cats in the community. While some things have changed, their commitment to improving the lives of street cats remains as strong as ever.

LUNI (Love the Unwanted, Neglected & Ill-Treated!) applied for charity status and received in-principle approval as of April 2026. The organization continues to provide medical care, support feeders who are on the ground feeding community cats, carry out trap-neuter-release (TNR) management, and rehome kittens and cats.

The hard part no one sees ❤️‍🩹

Rescue work may look rewarding from the outside, but there is also an emotionally and physically exhausting side that people do not always see.

For LUNI, one of the most difficult parts of the work is having to make the decision to say “no” when funds or capacity are limited.

“The most exhausting part is having to ‘harden’ our hearts when we have to say ‘no’ when we do not have sufficient funds and limited capacity.”

It is an emotional process for the team as well. Every rescue has to be carefully considered, and they have to determine whether they have the funds to continue providing the help needed or whether they have the capacity to take in more cats.

LUNI does not have a central shelter. Instead, the organization works with foster families who are willing to care for cats and kittens in a home environment. They currently work with 30–35 foster families.

And despite the physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that comes with rescue work, there is something that keeps them going:

“Rescue work is physically, emotionally, and mentally exhausting, but what keeps us going is knowing that we can make a difference, even if only for a single cat.”

A little advice can go a long way 😊

For anyone who wants to help street kittens but is unsure where to start, LUNI recommends working with an existing cat rescue group.

There are also many good resources available online. LUNI specifically recommends the work and educational resources of Jackson Galaxy (Cat Daddy) and Hannah Shaw (Kitten Lady).

Working with experienced rescuers and learning from reliable resources can help people understand how to provide the right kind of help to cats in need.

More cats in need of help 🌟

LUNI has seen a sharp increase in cat abandonment, as well as more calls from the community asking for medical assistance for community and stray cats.

Some of the medical cases they encounter are complex and require many weeks, and sometimes months, of treatment. Abandoned cats can also have mild to severe medical issues, which can make it difficult for them to be rehomed easily.

In these situations, foster families are especially important.

“In cases as such, we are in desperate need for foster families who can help foster these cats till they are well on the road to recovery.”

Fostering gives cats a safe home environment while they receive the care they need and, hopefully, get one step closer to finding their forever home.

How you can help, wherever you are 🌍

For expatriates residing in Singapore, LUNI welcomes people who would like to join them in their work or support the organization financially.

For people living overseas, cash donations are also welcome. As LUNI is now a registered charity, they will need to carry out the necessary checks as required by the authorities.

Whether you are able to open your home to a cat in need, support the organization financially, or help spread awareness, every contribution can make a difference.

And just as we saw when we first spoke with LUNI in 2023, their work continues to be driven by the same simple but powerful goal: helping cats in the community, one cat at a time.
